We will follow the trials and fortunes of one of the most prominent ruling family dynasties of Europe during the last 1,000 years. The map of Hapsburg power shows how their vast global, multilingual, and multicultural empire shaped the history of Europe and its art, from the Medieval period to the end of WWI, ending in a brilliant modernist artistic revolt. Art from Titian to Klimt mirrors the history of the royal dynasty that commissioned, collected, or inspired it, with the best artists from many lands all celebrating Hapsburg glory and power, including Albrecht Durer, Arcimboldo, and others in the decorative arts, grandiose architecture and music for the Court. The global trail of Hapsburg connections determined where works of art ended up, whom they influenced, and how art evolved. Come, find out how it all started! [L, D]
