Reading Four Biographies

Summer 4-Week 1 / $85
Mondays July 10 - July 31 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Donna Cleavelin, Sally Kopman
We will read four biographies (one a week) about people whose perspectives are significant and varied. First is Five Presidents: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford by Clint Hill (with Lisa McCubbin), a Secret Service agent reflecting on his seventeen years protecting the most powerful office in the nation. Then we will move on to Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong by Terry Teachout, which paints a gripping portrait of the man, his world, and his music. Next we'll read Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance, a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis-that of white working-class Americans. We'll conclude with Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, the compelling, inspiring, and comically sublime story of one man's coming-of-age in the twilight of apartheid, by Trevor Noah, host of The Daily Show.
